It seems that some species never got checked in at all. One cartoon I saw recently gave us the reason for this: The cartoon showed two rather amphibious looking creatures ascending the ramp of the ark. (looking vaguely like the coelacanth) At the top of the ramp Noah confronted the pair with the order "No missing links!"
